That’s sooo Web 1.0 OR The New Way to Network

If you’ve been on the Internet recently, I’m sure you’ve seen the new wave of “Social Networking” sites, such as MySpace, Digg, del.icio.us, YouTube, etc…
These new sites are part of what is being called Web 2.0. Web 2.0 was a term used by Tim O’Reily to describe a second generation of web-based services such as Social Networking sites that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).
The emphasis of Web 2.0 applications is to create a community of sharing among the users.
I define Web 2.0 as The New Networking.
Networking has always been based on sharing mutually beneficial information among people. Most businesses rely on some form of networking in order to survice. On the Internet it is vital to success.
However, the Web 1.0 (my term to describe the “old way” of doing business on the Internet) of doing things was intrusive and sometimes rude. Because of this way of doing business, people got fed up with the onslaught, which prompted government legislation (Anti-SPAM Act).
I’ve been guilty of Web 1.0 marketing in the past. I purchased “opt-in” leads from vendors, and slammed them into autoresponders. My domain was blacklisted and I lost all credibility, and almost the ability to operate an online business.
Since then I’ve been searching for a way to Network on the Internet, without offending or being intrusive. I tried to set up a community on my web site, but wasn’t very successful at it, until now.
My first step was to set up a Blog (http://stayhomedads.com/news) on my site. By using a blog I was able to allow my community users to respond to my posts. This provided some level of interactivity, and was a step towards what I was envisioning.
However, unknown to me, at the same time, there were new services popping up on the Internet. At first they were geared toward “hooking up”, and started receiving a bad reputation.
However, recently I’ve been learning about these services and seeing a new potential and a realization of my goal of creating a community.
I’ll be posting here more about my adventures in using Web 2.0 services to build a Network of like-minded people.
I’d like to hear from you (post a comment below) about your own experiences or any comments you may have about using Web 2.0 services.
Keep Networking,
Charles aka StayHomeDad
