Creating a Niche Site - Part 2: How To Pick A Niche

Today is the first lesson (the second part) of the StayHomeDads Reality Show, “Watch Me Create A Niche Site“.

Thanks for coming back and following my progress.

Today I will cover How To Pick A Niche.

Before you get started creating a niche site, you need to pick a niche to target. There are hundreds of ways and methods to pick a niche for your site.

I have read and analyzed several different systems for choosing a niche to market to. A great ebook that will help you do the research needed is Finding Profitable Niches by Doug and Teri Champigny.

You can use many different methods for picking a niche. You can look around you and start listing things in your immediate area such as your computer, printer, office desk, office chair, etc… You can make a list of all your hobbies, what you do for work, your likes and dislikes.

After you pick a niche, you need to do some research to determine if it is even worth your time getting into that niche. You need to find the answer to 2 questions:

  1. Is anybody doing searches for your niche?
  2. Is anybody making money in your niche?

It may come as no surprise to you that Google will probably be your best tool (at least the best free one) to answer those two questions. You can find out a lot of information by using the Google Keyword tools found here: Google Keyword Tool

I highly recommend that you get a copy of Finding Profitable Niches in order to learn how to use Google and other free tools to determine what niche will be best for you.

The other way to choose a niche, and the method I am using, is based on what content I already have. If you already have content laying around collecting “digital dust” you might have enough to make a decent site in a particular niche.

If you don’t already have niche content, there are several great sites where you can get content for free. I belong to some PLR membership sites which give you not only great PLR articles to populate your site, but also header graphics, so you can quickly upload a quality niche site.

One of the best sites to provide you with quality PLR content and ready made graphics is Jason Oickle’s Private Label Club. Each month you receive 25 fresh private label articles plus 2 header graphics you can customize for your site. The best part is, you get this access for free! That’s right, for a limited time you can get a membership to Jason Oickle’s Private Label Club for FREE! That’s a $97 monthly value! (Believe me, it truly is! I’ve seen many Niche PLR membership sites for over $97 a month and that doesn’t include graphics!)

So, because I have the content, and a site header, due to my membership in Private Label Club, I have chosen my niche to be Computer Programming (oh yeah, I’m a big computer geek too! ;-) ). If you do a Google Search on Computer Programming, you’ll see that there are over 23 million results for those keywords. If you use the Google Keyword Tool there are a lot of good keyword suggestions, and the CPC for adwords is less than $2, which is recommended by the experts as a good price.

If you want to get up and going quickly, get your free membership to Private Label Club and you’ll be able to get a site up quickly.

As you can see I already covered the next step, Find Content. I covered this here because it was key in deciding which niche I was going to target.

The next step in this process is to Create The Site.

Stay Tuned…
